Margariti Thesprotias & its sights

128 Videos

Margariti (Margarithon) is located on the southwest coast of Epirus,
(in the heart of ancient Eleatida).

In the area of ancient Eleatida, at pre-christian times some states are mentioned,
which later they were destroyed, such as Limnaya and Elinia.

Margaritis was founded in 1430 by the Venetians and its first inhabitants
were Christians, and later colonized by Albanian tribes.

After the fall of the Byzantine Empire the inhabitants of the settlement
were largely Islamized. In return for the overturning of the belfry and
the construction of minarets, they became masters of the fertile plains.

After the fall of Venice (mainly with the decline of Otto Autos and the attempt to liberate Ali Pasha) the Margaritans agitate against the Turkish-Pasha of Ioannina, which they eventually subjugated in 1811.

It was only at the beginning of the 20th century that Margaritis became Greek, and that is the time when the peasants received the first beatings on the conversion and curbing of tsunamis by the laws of Venizelos.

But they continue to be the ruling class until World War II in which they have a pro-Axis attitude.  It is their attitude that forces them to leave the settlement for the interior of Albania at the end of the war. According to the Arabian Margaret in 1815 had about 8500 inhabitants.

After 1940-41 there was a sharp decline in population mainly due to the departure of Albanian-speaking Muslims. The decline would have been even greater had the abandoned mansions and crops not been a strong incentive for colonization by neighboring and other mountain villages.
