Matsouki is located on the mountains of Pindos at an altitude of 1100 meters between creeks and steep slopes. During the Ottoman domination around 1805, Ali Pasha wanted to destroy the area economically.

The residents of Matsouki were forced to borrow money by loan sharks but the debts were unaffordable and many left in Agrafa. In 1809 the people who reamained in Matsouki, decided to sell the village at Ali Pasha. Ali Pasha agreed the offer and promised to pay them 12 reticules.

But he did not keep his word and he gave them only two reticules after becoming the owner of the village. The monastery of Vilizas is one of the most important monasteries of the wider region. It was found during the Middle Byzantine period. The building that is preserved till today, dates back to the late 17th century. There are invaluable icons and manuscripts of the 14th and 15th centuries in the library of the monastery that impress every visitor.

Many manuscripts were removed in the museum of Vylissa in the village. The wet element in the area gives a special dynamic to the landscape.
